We were in a hurry aboard Van 1, with Fried Elliot at the helm, Chris Gray at the command post and Jason Odell as navigator, on the way to Moraine Park where Nikonians were literally surrounded by a huge elk herd. Although we had seen our share of nice animals, we never got so close as in those digital images the guys so proudly had shown us at lunch. So after rushing into town to pick some Provia 400F and having bought the last 4 rolls of it at the shop (or so I thought), just as we were exiting the YMCA grounds, elk were at the very side of the road. 7 voices were heard at the same time: "STOP!" and we were out. No time for tripods. My shutter speeds were very slow, so it could only mean my Provia was not 400 but 100. Hmm. Wear glasses when buying film over the counter!
This guy had only four young cows and was peacefully gracing, never minding us, when all of the sudden another bull began to challenge him bugling. As he turned his head I could swear he put a face like saying "Are you talking to me? You must be kidding! Look for someone with more cows and leave me alone!" At least he stood still enough for me to snap him handheld with ISO 100 film. Thank you VR!
